May 24, 2024
Written by Bester KayayeThe Central East African Railways Company Limited (CEAR) has officially communicated with the Lilongwe District Council, outlining plans to recommence its railway operations within and outside the jurisdiction of Lilongwe.
This announcement comes as a significant development for the region, signaling progress in the rehabilitation of vital transportation infrastructure.
In a statement released by CEAR's General Manager, Joyce Malongo, she expressed the company's commitment to revitalizing the railway network and ensuring safety for all stakeholders involved.
Malongo remarked, "The rehabilitation of the railway network marks a significant step forward in our efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure in Lilongwe and beyond.”
“We are dedicated to restoring safe and efficient rail services that will contribute to the socio-economic development of the region."
Regarding the upcoming phase of the project involving heavy machinery movement, Malongo emphasized the importance of precautionary measures.
She stated, "As we proceed with the final stages of rehabilitation, safety remains our top priority. We urge the Lilongwe District Council to collaborate with us in relocating informal market communities situated within the railway reserves, mitigating potential risks and ensuring the well-being of both our workers and the local population."
The resumption of railway operations follows a hiatus since 2019, coinciding with the cessation of services on the Lilongwe-Mchinji line.
As CEAR advances its rehabilitation efforts and collaborates with local authorities, stakeholders anticipate the manifold benefits of improved transportation links for the region's socio-economic landscape.
