Malawi Eyes Global Digital Skills Leadership-MACRA
Daudi Suleman, the Director General of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), has highlighted the potential for Malawi to emerge as a major exporter of digital skills. Speaking at a mobile connectivity index workshop in Lilongwe on Monday, Suleman emphasized the need for Malawi to seize new opportunities presented by the digital economy. Suleman stated, “It is right to export human labor, but we must also understand that there are more digital opportunities availing themselves across the world. Therefore, the more that we skill our people digitally, the bigger the opportunities that we are exposing for them." "They should be able to compete on a world level without moving from their homestead. What is key is to ensure that we have proper connectivity, and our people have access to smart devices that will enable them to access these opportunities.” The workshop, facilitated by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), brought together government officials, regulators, mobile operators, academia, and interest groups like the Competition and Fair-Trading Commission. GSMA is a global mobile organization that unifies the mobile ecosystem to promote mobile connectivity worldwide. Anne Shannon Baxter, GSMA Senior Advocacy Manager, expressed satisfaction with Malawi's improving performance in mobile connectivity. In an interview, she stated, “What is needed is for Malawi to find out how it can improve in digital affordability and content, among others. MACRA and other government agencies need to look at the data and uncover policy priority areas where they need to focus to further improve connectivity.” The workshop concentrated much on key thematic areas, including affordability, consumer readiness, content in data, and policy priorities. The goal is to identify areas where Malawi can enhance its mobile connectivity, allowing the country to tap into the digital opportunities emerging globally.
