District Commissioner for Blantyre, Alex Mdooko, has expressed satisfaction with the ongoing work to restore degraded landscapes in the district through the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme (CS-EPWP). During a supervisory tour of Zemba catchment in the area of Traditional Authority Machinjiri, Mdooko praised the communities for their active participation in activities such as constructing check dams, swales, reclaiming gullies, and planting trees. Highlighting the environmental challenges faced by Blantyre, Mdooko acknowledged the cases of soil erosion and deforestation but commended the community efforts to address these issues. He expressed hope that the widespread community involvement would significantly reduce cases of land degradation in the district. “Going through the sites we have visited, there are cases of soil erosion and deforestation, but I am pleased to learn that efforts are being made by communities to construct check dams, swales, reclaim gullies and plant trees, among others,” he said. Emphasizing the importance of civic education on land husbandry practices, Mdooko stressed the need to sustain the assets created for the benefit of future generations. Zemba Catchment Area Extension Worker, Effie Gama, revealed that the catchment is implementing seven subprojects under CS-EPWP, including tree planting and managing natural tree regeneration. Gama commended the District Commissioner for inspecting the sites, appreciating the work on the ground, and encouraging communities to do the same in their respective homes.
