The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has suspended operations at Mponela Supersink Service Station in Dowa after the outlet was found selling fuel in jerrycans without authorization.

The incident, reported on August 29, 2025, prompted investigations which confirmed the violation.

In a statement dated September 1, 2025, MERA said the station’s conduct directly contravened its directive banning the sale of fuel in jerrycans or other containers without a valid permit.

The authority stressed that the regulation is in place to safeguard fair distribution and ensure fuel is sold safely.

“The sale of fuel in jerrycans without a valid permit is a serious offense, and we urge all service stations to strictly adhere to our guidelines,” MERA said in the statement.

The regulator added: “Our regulations are designed to protect consumers and ensure that fuel is sold in a safe and controlled manner. We will continue to monitor service stations and take action against those that fail to comply.”

MERA also encouraged the public to report any retailers suspected of engaging in illegal practices.

“We urge consumers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to MERA, the police, or through our official communication channels. We remain committed to ensuring a fair and stable fuel supply in Malawi,” the authority said.

The suspension, MERA noted, should serve as a warning to all fuel service stations across the country to comply with its regulations and directives.
