Malawi is set to celebrate National Tourism Month in September 2025, with the Ministry of Tourism emphasizing the critical role of the media in promoting the sector and raising public awareness of tourism’s importance.
Joseph Nkosi, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, confirmed that preparations are well underway.
He said this year’s theme will focus on “Tourism and Sustainable Development,” highlighting the growing role of technology and innovation in promoting tourism as a key driver of economic growth.
Nkosi noted that previous tourism month celebrations successfully increased domestic travel, boosted small-scale economic activities along travel routes, and encouraged Malawians to explore the country’s scenic beauty.
“Even short trips, such as traveling from Blantyre to Lilongwe, contribute to tourism and support small businesses, as travelers often purchase food, beverages, and other items along the way,” Nkosi said.
Key partners for the celebration include the Malawi Tourism Council, the Travel Agents Association of Malawi, and the Hotel Owners Association of Malawi, with more stakeholders expected to join as the event approaches.
Memory Momba, Executive Director of the Malawi Tourism Council, said the month-long celebration will provide platforms for exposure, create partnership opportunities for tourism operators, and encourage locals to appreciate Malawi’s cultural and natural attractions.
“Tourism starts with us. Let us embrace our culture, protect our environment, and support local tourism,” Momba said.
She acknowledged that the sector faces challenges, including limited financial resources and infrastructure gaps, but expressed optimism that innovation and strategic partnerships can drive growth.
National Tourism Month aims to promote domestic tourism and raise awareness of its contribution to Malawi’s development.
The official launch is scheduled for 1st September 2025, with the venue to be announced in due course.
